A resident has taken matters into their own hands by cleaning up several neglected areas around the town.
The volunteer said they spent much of Saturday morning clearing one particularly untidy location, despite living nowhere near it.
The decision to help came after walking into town with their daughter and noticing how poor some areas looked along their route.
They said: “It’s clear the council aren’t doing it, or haven’t been doing it for some time now, so I thought I would chip away at some places that are really bad.”
After filling a large builders’ bag with weeds and rubbish, the resident admitted they struggled to fit it inside their car before taking it away.
They had also tackled tall weeds near the town’s Aldi store the previous morning but said considerably more work was still required in the area.
Particular concern was raised about the appearance of the bus station, which the resident described as a poor first impression for visitors and tourists arriving in the town.
They also warned that a number of drains appeared to be filled with weeds and could cause problems when heavier rain returns.
“Living around mess suppresses people,” they said. “It looks so much better now, but it’s the tip of the iceberg.”
The resident encouraged others to play their part in improving their surroundings, adding: “If everyone gave a bit back to their community, I am sure we would be living in a much tidier environment and a much happier one.”
